An Overview of Phuket

History of Phuket Summary

Phuket is a province in the south of Thailand. It is the largest island in the whole country.
Phuket is 576 km squared in size. It is famous for beautiful beaches and wonderful and tasty food. Here is a brief summary of Phuket.

About 65 million years ago there were caveman living in Phuket. Approximately 4,000 years ago there were sea-gypsies or as called in Thai, Chao Lay. They eat fish and seafood for a living. They live on the coasts and work in seas. They settle in one bay and when they have taken all the resources they need, they would go to another bay to give they first bay time to recover with more natural resources.

In Phuket there are two main religions, Buddhism and Muslim. 94. 6% of the population in Phuket is Buddhists, 4.6% of the population is Muslims and 0.7% is Christians. There are around 40 Buddhist temples across the Island. Buddhist temples are called “wat” in Thai. Most of the people in Phuket are pretty strict in religion, if they are Muslims, they would pray 5 times a day and if they are Buddhist they would wake up early every morning to give food and flowers for good luck to the monks which walk past.

One of the most important Phuket histories: the Heroine Monument. Thao Thep Kasattri and Thao Sri Sunthon or as Thais call them Ya Mook and Ya Chan were the two sisters who saved Phuket from the Burmese in the Burmese-Siamese War during the year 1785-1786. They dressed up as men to scare away the enemy.

Tin mining had also made a lot of change to Phuket. Phuket had a lot of tin and coal underground which they dug and got a lot of money from. Many people rely on tin mining for food and for surviving.

This lead to tourism. Phuket has had many beautiful beaches, nice food,  lovely smiles and was attracted by foreigners.  Most people come for holidays with friends and family and some even come and stay permanently. Phuket has nice weather most of the time not cold like in European countries. Chinese also love coming to Phuket for holiday as well and now they have many Chinese restaurants for the people who come and visit.
